Natural disasters, apart from causing extreme damage to the environment, also cause extreme trauma, shock and psychological impact amongst the public. Natural disasters list contains seven broadly classified segregations and many different subdivisions. The categories are:

  • Meteorological: These types are the most frequently occurring natural disasters. The earth is simultaneously subject to many different types of meteorological disasters at any given point of time. There can be a severe drought in on part of the world while the other part might be affected by blizzards and storms. Geographical influences can determine these types of disasters and the duration can sometimes run into several months and years. The impact on environment and human life can be gradual but definite. Storms, blizzards, droughts, tornadoes and heat waves are the major subdivisions in this category.
  • Hydrological: Natural disasters list include hydrological disasters which are influenced by other categories. For example, a tsunami is a byproduct of an earthquake and floods are caused by cyclones and hurricanes. These disasters cause high casualties, especially in developing countries and highly populous places.
  • Geological: Avalanches, volcanoes and earthquakes are the sub categories in this natural disasters list. He impact to human lives can range from very low to extremely high. Avalanches and volcanoes occur on a daily basis at some part of the world. The impact depends upon the severity of the disaster. A small earthquake may not cause any damage but a severe one can cost thousands of lives.
  • Fires: Manmade and naturally occurring fires are included in the natural disasters list. Damage cause by naturally occurring fires is environmental in nature. Manmade fires, especially in populous cities can effect loss of many lives, along with destruction of infrastructure and disruption in day to day activities.
  • Space: Millions of meteors and space particles bombard the earth every day. Most of these are destroyed by the friction caused when they pass through the atmosphere. Some are big enough to withstand this friction and reach the surface of the earth but even then the impact is minimal. When the size of these space rocks is huge, the effects upon impact with the earth can be devastating. A big impact can carry the power of several nuclear bombs.
  • Health related: Famines and epidemic outbreaks constitute the subdivisions of this type of natural disasters list.
  • Manmade: Even though all other disasters also can be influenced by man, this category specifies war related environmental damage.
